Seattle Marathon Street closures: how to escape Capitol Hill
On Sunday November 29th, 2009 the Seattle Marathon encircles Capitol Hill, with various streets closed. Races start at ~ 7 AM; I-90 reopens at ~ 11 AM; all roads reopen by 2:15 PM. Going north on 23rd to the University District or getting to I-5 via the Roanoke onramps won't work. Accessing I-5 via Madison, Denny-Steward-Yale (southbound) or Olive (northbound) will work. (link to maps on Marathon website). Note that the I5 off-ramp at Olive is closed for light rail construction.

I live in Eastlake and it took me 1.5 hours to get home after trying to get to the Eygptian movie house on Pike. The only access to Eastlake from Capital Hill is from the University District, and this is difficult. I had to take the freeway to the U District. I wish the planners of the Marathon would take this into consideration. Those of us who live in Eastlake do not like to be imprisoned during this event.
sure would be nice if the marathon organizers distributed copies of these maps all over the hill - I've gotten trapped in the past and not been able to get accurate advice from the police and volunteers standing at the roadblocks. So now I just stay home.
You can contact the Seattle Marathon via their website:

or find one of their board of directors:

Dan Ledrick, the Logistics Coordinator would seem an appropriate person to contact.
Looks like Madison Park village is completely cut off... is that right? Can you get on to the road through the arboretum?
The marathon site is useless
East Madison Street is marked as "Traffic Restricted 8:15 - 2:15 PM". Some other streets are marked as closed, rather than restricted, so presumably some traffic is allowed on Madison.
